“THAT I AM A REALIST IN THESE MATTERS I CANNOT DENY, BUT I AM NOT AN ALARMIST”: CHURCHILL ON THE EVE OF WORLD WAR II
CHURCHILL, Winston. While England Slept. A Survey of World Affairs, 1932-1938. New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1938. Octavo, original navy cloth, original dust jacket.
First American edition of Churchill’s important collection of speeches, released in Britain under the title Arms and the Covenant.
While articulating these stirring proposals for war preparation one year before the eruption of the Second World War, Churchill remained hopeful of peace, despite growing unease regarding the aggressive and ominous rearmament of Hitler’s Germany. This book includes chapters such as “The Darkening Scene,” “The German Air Menace,” and, with remarkable foresight, “Air Raid Precautions.” Preceded by the English edition, which appeared three months earlier, titled Arms and the Covenant. Woods A44(b). Owner ink signature dated 1938.
Book near-fine, dust jacket with some creasing and edge-wear, bright and very good.
