"LOOK ONLY TO GOD AND CONSCIENCE FOR APPROVAL!": PRESENTATION FIRST EDITION OF CONGRESSWOMAN SHIRLEY CHISHOLM'S FIRST BOOK, UNBOUGHT AND UNBOSSED, INSCRIBED BY HER

CHISHOLM, Shirley. Unbought and Unbossed. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1970. Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Congresswoman Chisholm's first book, published only two years after she became the first black woman elected to the U.S. Congress, praised on publication as a "testament to her honesty and vigilance," a presentation copy inscribed on the half title by her, "To: B— P— Look only to God and conscience for approval! Compliments of Congresswoman Chisholm."

"Before Barack Obama, before Hillary Clinton, Shirley Chisholm was both the first woman and the first African American to run for the nomination of a major party for President of the United States. Already the first black woman to be elected to the United States Congress in 1968," she was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus and Congressional Women's Caucus (Smithsonian). Unbought and Unbossed, her first book, won praise on publication as "a testament to her honesty and vigilance" (New York Times). In its pages she calls the title, her campaign slogan, "an expression of what I believe I was and what I want to be—what I want all candidates for public office to be… There must be a new coalition of all Americans—black, white, red, yellow and brown, rich and poor… we must join together." In her nearly 15 years in Congress, Chisholm "challenged institutional customs, pushing her way into spaces that had been the reserve of white men" (Washington Post). In an interview near the end of her life, she said: "I want history to remember me… not as the first black woman to have made a bid for the presidency of the United States, but as a black woman who lived in the 20th century and who dared to be herself. I want to be remembered as a catalyst for change in America." The recipient, Bertram Podell, represented New York in the House of Representatives for over three terms before he fell into disgrace when he pled guilty to a conspiracy charge and lost his seat in Congress. Bookseller inkstamp.

Book fine; slight dampstaining, mild toning to spine of extremely good dust jacket.
