"ONE OF THOSE RARE BOOKS… A PLEASURE TO READ": FIRST EDITION OF IN JULIA’S KITCHEN WITH MASTER CHEFS, INSCRIBED BY JULIA CHILD AND SIGNED BY HER MASTER CHEF DEAN FEARING

CHILD, Julia. In Julia's Kitchen with Master Chefs. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1995. Large quarto (9-1/2 by 10-1/2 inches), original tan and white laminated paper boards, original dust jacket. $1200.

First edition of this richly illustrated celebration of American cuisine, with recipes and insights from Julia Child and 26 master chefs, inscribed by her on the title page, "For N— Julia Child," and signed by one of her "master chefs," Dean Fearing, at his featured page.

In Julia's Kitchen with Master Chefs is "special—one of those rare books packed with information that's a pleasure to read… It's as rare to capture a mood in a book as it is for a writer to be able to write the way he or she speaks. Look, for instance, at the notes from Julia to the cook about aspects of a chef's menu that caught her interest, whether it be sweetbreads (yes, you should try cooking them) or veal (she likes it pink and classic, not 'baby beef') or 'garlic lore and handling tips.' They ring with that authoritative, infinitely useful voice every American cook treasures…. What's more, In Julia's Kitchen gives you a warm, familial sense of being on the set and right there with Julia and her [26] guest cooks—a group of cooks from all over the country who really care about what they're doing and produce food that the home cook can cook, too" (Atlantic).

This copy is inscribed by Julia Child, and signed by one of her "master chefs," Dean Fearing, in bold black felt pen at his featured page. Chef Fearing, known as the "Father of Southwestern Cuisine," is an award-winning restauranteur, as well as author of The Texas Food Bible, Mansion on Turtle Creek Cookbook and Dean Fearing's Southwest Cuisine. Fearing's recipes here include his signature "Mansion Shimp Diablo 'Tamale.'" "First Edition" stated on copyright page. Published in conjunction with the 1995 PBS special of the same name. Co-authored with Nancy Verde Barr, photographs by Micheal McLaughlin.

Only tiny bit of soiling to front flap of colorful dust jacket. A lovely copy in fine condition.
