FIRST EDITION OF THE FAITHFUL, YET IMPERFECT, CHARACTER OF A GLORIOUS KING, KING CHARLES I, 1660, IN CONTEMPORARY BINDING, THE PIRIE COPY
(CHARLES I). The Faithful, Yet Imperfect, Character of a Glorious King, King Charles I. His Country's & Religions Martyr. London: Printed for Richard Royston, 1660. Small octavo, contemporary full brown sheep.
First edition of this posthumous biography of Charles I, largely complimentary, written by an anonymous royalist, in contemporary binding. The copy of famous collector Robert S. Pirie with his bookplate.
Generally attributed to John Dauncey on the strength of two other contemporary works (A History of His Sacred Majesty Charles II and An Exact History of the Several Changes in Government in England), this biography was written from the perspective of a committed royalist and was one of a number of books from the period attempting to rehabilitate the late Charles I's image in the years following the English Civil War and the subsequent Restoration of the monarchy. Wing F291. ESTC R201972. From the distinguished collection of lawyer, banker, and bibliophile Robert S. Pirie and bearing his bookplate. Pirie devoted himself to the acquisition of pre-1700 literature and the creation of an unparalleled personal library of rare books. "Pirie considered the post-Shakespeare world of Francis Bacon, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and John Dryden the richest in all literature" (Financial Times). This history would have fit neatly onto his shelves, contextualizing key parts of his collection. Armorial bookplate. Andrew Marvell poem neatly written in ink on front free endpaper.
Interior quite nice, a bit of wear to binding. An extremely good copy.
