“THE ANCIENT STATE OF THAT COUNTRY IS VERY LITTLE KNOWN…”: THE FIRST CRITICAL STUDY OF ARMENIAN HISTORY, 1827 FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH
(ARMENIA) CHAMICH, Michael. History of Armenia… from B.C. 2247 to the Year of Christ 1780, or 1229 of the Armenian Era, Translated from the Original Armenian, by Johannes Audall. Calcutta: H. Townsend, 1827. Two volumes. Octavo, modern three-quarter brown morocco, raised bands.
First edition in English of Father Chamich’s (Chamchian’s) authoritative history, generally considered the first critical study of Armenian history, with folding engraved map and two folding engraved plates.
This work was originally published in Armenian as “Patmut’iwn Hayots” in three volumes, 1784-86, which the author later abridged and published as “Khrakhchan patmut’ean hayots” in 1811. The present translation by John Audall is of the shorter version. In his postscript, Audall completes the history from 1780 to roughly the time of publication. He also notes that “In consequence of the tyranny which the Mohometans exercise over the Christians whom they have subjected to their power, Armenia is almost depopulated. The inhabitants seize every opportunity to leave their wretched country and settle in places under milder government. Russia being the nearest Christian power, multitudes have migrated thither, and have been uniformly treated by the Czars with as much kindness as their own native sujbects… They possess in Moscow a well endowed college, in which the sciences are taught in the Armenian langauge…” (II, 506). This college is depicted in the engraved folding frontispiece in Volume II. List of subscribers bound in at rear of Volume II. Presentation inscription dated 1835 on title pages.
Two closed tears to map, along folds. Text generally clean. An attractively bound copy of this scarce work.
