LE BALLET, WITH ORIGINAL CHAGALL LITHOGRAPH

(CHAGALL, Marc) LASSAIGNE, Jacques. Marc Chagall: Dessins et Aquarelles pour Le Ballet. Paris: XXe Siècle, (1969). Folio, original light gray cloth gilt, original dust jacket.

First edition of Chagall’s decors and costume designs for Aleko, Firebird, and Daphnis and Chloe, containing 68 full-color reproductions, with an original color lithograph bound in.

“Chagall had been interested in theater since his early Paris days, but it was not until… the granting of a commission by the Metropolitan Opera for the re-staging of the ballet Aleko… that he had an opportunity to experiment with his revolutionary ideas.” The original Chagall lithograph was printed by Fernand Mourlot, who ran a lithography press in the rue de Chabrol where the likes of Braque, Matisse, Picasso and Chagall came to have their designs printed and to learn about this still nascent medium. Mourlot soon established a reputation as a printer of the first rank among the great modern masters. Text in French. Cramer 78. Sorlier 101. Gauss 581.

Book fine, with only a minor bump to tail of spine, light rubbing to extremities of original dust jacket.
