Lithographs of Marc Chagall

THE LITHOGRAPHS OF CHAGALL, WITH 12 ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHS, INSCRIBED BY CHAGALL TO YEHUDI MENUHIN WITH A LARGE ORIGINAL DRAWING

CHAGALL, Marc. The Lithographs of Chagall. Monte Carlo: André Sauret, (1960). Folio, original beige cloth, original lithographic dust jacket.

First edition of the first volume in the catalogue raisonné of Chagall’s lithographs, richly illustrated with 12 original lithographs (including the dust jacket), inscribed, “Pour Diana et Yehudi Menuhin, Marc Chagall, Vence 1961,” embellished with an original drawing of an angel with a violin.

“Chagall’s emblematic irrationality shook off all outside influences: color governed his compositions, calling up chimerical processions of memory where reality and the imaginary are woven into a single legend, born in Vitebsk and dreamed in Paris” (Dictionary of Modern Art). For Chagall, the medium of lithography did not come easily. Printer Fernand Mourlot ran a lithography press where such greats as Braque, Matisse, Picasso, Miró and Chagall came to have their designs printed and to learn about this still nascent print-making process. “For many long months Chagall came and worked tirelessly, and his dissatisfaction allowed him to have only a few of his first attempts printed” (Sorlier, 45). This first volume of Chagall’s collected lithographs was followed by five successive volumes in series. Volume I , which contains 12 of the original 28 lithographs published throughout the series, is extremely desirable, especially inscribed and with a drawing. Published simultaneously with a deluxe edition of 100 copies. Cramer, 43. Sorlier 281-296. Freitag 1914. The recipients of this copy were famous violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin, commonly considered one of the 20th century’s greatest violin virtuosi (Oxford Dictionary) and his wife, ballet dancer and actress Diana Gould.

Text block expertly repaired, bright dust jacket with minor closed tears and a bit of shallow chipping to spine head. A near-fine inscribed copy, with an original drawing and distinguished association.
