History of the Renowned Don Quixote

“EVERY NATION HAS TAKEN CARE TO MAKE IT THEIR OWN BY THEIR TRANSLATIONS”: HANDSOMELY BOUND 1766 EDINBURGH EDITION OF DON QUIXOTE

CERVANTES. The History of the Renowned Don Quixote de la Mancha. Edinburgh: A. Donaldson, 1766. Four volumes. 12mo, contemporary full polished calf rebacked in period-style calf gilt, raised bands, red and green morocco spine labels. $2500.

1766 edition in English of Cervantes’ chivalric satire—“one of those universal works which are read by all ages at all times” (PMM 111)—handsomely bound in contemporary calf.

"Cervantes' great, ironical, romantic story is written in a style so noble, so nervous, so humane, so branded with reality that, as the wise critic has said, the mere touch and impact of it puts courage into our veins" (Powys 27). Río y Rico 458. Catalogo del Quijote 320. Andrieux 37. See Allibone, 1381. Contemporary owner inscriptions, a few contemporary marginal annotations; evidence of old owner signature in Volume II having been effaced, minor loss to front free endpaper.

Occasional light foxing and marginal offsettting. Mild loss to title page of Volume IV, slightly affecting text. Contemporary calf boards handsome.
