"Don Quixote is one of those universal works which are read by all ages at all times, and there are very few who have not at one time or another felt themselves to be Don Quixote confronting the windmills or Sancho Panza at the inn" (PMM 111). Charles Jarvis' translation, one of the earliest, is also regarded as one of the best. "Published posthumously in 1742 and frequently reprinted, it is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original" (Oxford DNB).
