“REQUIRES TO BE CONSULTED BY MEN OF ALL ECCLESIASTICAL VIEWS”: 1677 FIRST EDITION OF CAVE’S LIVES OF THE PRIMITIVE FATHERS

CAVE, William. Apostolici; Or, the History of the Lives, Acts, Death, and Martyrdoms of Those Who Were Contemporary with, or Immediately Succeeded the Apostles. As Also the Most Eminent of the Primitive Fathers. London: A.C. for Richard Chiswel, 1677. Folio (8 by 12 inches), contemporary full dark brown paneled calf rebacked, raised bands, red morocco spine label.

First edition of this collection of biographical sketches of the lives of the Christian church's founding fathers, with engraved title page and 23 large engraved vignette portraits of early saints, fathers, and martyrs by Burghers.

Chaplain to King Charles II, Cave "is said to have been 'of a learned and communicative conversation;' he is also reported to have been 'a florid and eloquent preacher… But his fame rests upon his writings on church history, which are voluminous and valuable" (DNB), including this work. Apostolici is the source for Oliver Goldsmith's similar work, issued by Newbery in 1774. "Dr. Cave's work requires to be consulted by men of all ecclesiastical views" (Allibone, 356). Wing C1590. Lowndes, 2585. From the collection of William Safire; with the bookplate of Pinchinthorpe House, Guisborough.

Text generally clean and fresh, a bit of light wear to corners of contemporary calf covers. An attractive copy of this illustrated folio.
