FIRST EDITION OF BLACK VENUS, INSCRIBED AND TWICE SIGNED BY ANGELA CARTER

CARTER, Angela. Black Venus. London: Chatto & Windus, (1985). Octavo, original black paper boards, original dust jacket.

First edition of this extraordinary collection of short stories, inscribed on title page: "For Tim—all best wishes! Angela" and additionally signed "Angela Carter" above the author's printed name.

This collection, named for its title story about Baudelaire's lover and muse, Jeanne Duval, includes short stories about characters ranging from Edgar Allen Poe to Lizzie Borden. Carter has even invented a few memorable protagonists, such as a child chef, a girl raised by wolves, and a 17th-century prostitute sent to live with the Indians. Patricia Craig, writing in the London Review of Books, called Black Venus "an inspiriting new collection of eight by an inveterate scrutiniser of the whole romantic box of tricks." All of the stories from this work were reprinted in Burn Your Boats, a comprehensive collection of Carter's short fiction.
