CARSON, Rachel. Silent Spring. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1962. Octavo, original green cloth, patterned endpapers, original dust jacket.

First edition, first printing, of Rachel Carson's pioneering work in environmental pollution, signed by her on the half title.

"The first work to address the larger issues of environmental pollution" (The Book in America, 133). "Silent Spring became a runaway bestseller, with international reverberations… It is well crafted, fearless and succinct… Even if she had not inspired a generation of activists, Carson would prevail as one of the greatest nature writers in American letters" (Mattheissen, Time). In 1963, Carson was awarded the Audubon Medal by the National Audubon Society and the Cullum Medal by the American Geographical Society. With "First Printing" on copyright page, in first-issue dust jacket with no mention of awards on rear flap. Serialized in the New Yorker beginning in June 1962, the book itself was published in September of the same year. With numerous in-text illustrations. Owner signature.

Only lightest edge-wear, small chip to upper corner of dust jacket. A near-fine signed copy.
