"WITH COMPLIMENTS OF THE AUTHOR": PRESENTATION COPY OF AN AMERICAN FOUR-IN-HAND IN BRITAIN, INSCRIBED BY CARNEGIE AND WITH A SIGNED AUTOGRAPH LUNCHEON INVITATION WRITTEN BY CARNEGIE TIPPED-IN

CARNEGIE, Andrew. An American Four-in-Hand in Britain. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1883. Octavo, original black- and gilt-stamped tan cloth, top edge gilt.

First trade edition, presentation copy, of Carnegie's chronicle of his coaching trip from Brighton to Inverness, inscribed on the dedication page in the year of publication: "William Digby Esq. with Compliments of The Author. London June 23/83," and with a luncheon invitation written and signed entirely in Carnegie's hand tipped onto the same page.

In An American Four-in-Hand in Britain, Scottish-American industrialist Andrew Carnegie offers a delightful account of a coaching trip with his dearest friends from Brighton to Inverness. A small private printing for Carnegie's friends preceded this edition. This presentation copy is inscribed to William Digby, most likely the journalist and humanitarian activist who dedicated much of his life to promoting Indian relief causes. The luncheon invitation, tipped onto the dedication page below the presentation inscription, reads in full: "Come to lunch tomorrow ^on Wednesday—long lunch 1:30. We are off Thursday am. —— Yours, Andrew Carnegie." "Owner signature of Jahu Dewitt Miller Philadelphia Penna." at rear. Miller was a devoted book collector who interacted with many of the famous authors of his day such as Walt Whitman. He was also a popular lecturer who used his talent as a lay minister to forge a secular career reliant on his wit and observational skills. Tiny library label on spine.

Interior generally fine, light wear and soiling to cloth. Extremely good condition.
