"THIS WRITTEN RECORD IS WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD": FIRST EDITION OF ALL THE BEST, TWICE SIGNED BY PRESIDENT GEORGE H.W. BUSH

BUSH, George H.W. All the Best, George Bush. My Life in Letters and Other Writings. (New York): Scribner, (1999). Octavo, original half blue paper boards, original dust jacket.

First trade edition, published the same year as a signed limited edition, boldly signed on the title page by President George H.W. Bush, this very scarce copy also with his signature on an official slip affixed to the colophon page, along with an laid-in slip printed, "Office of George Bush," containing the printed note, "President Bush was happy to sign the enclosed item for you. It comes with his best wishes," featuring 16 pages of black-and-white photographic illustrations.

President George H.W. Bush has led "one of the great American lives… the only president since John Adams to see his son also win the ultimate prize in American politics." To historian Jon Meacham, there "is nothing affected about Bush's vision of politics as a means to public service, and of public service as the highest of callings" (Destiny and Power, xvi-xvii). "In 1999, just as his son George W. Bush was launching a bid for the presidency, George H.W. Bush was launching a bestselling book, All the Best, which reintroduced Americans to the 41st president and his family… this written record is worth its weight in gold" (Washington Post). This volume of President George H.W. Bush's letters, which moves from his earliest days to his service in WWII, his marriage and presidency, remains one of his most intimate portraits. Throughout "the Bush voice is the same: decent, friendly, earnest, guileless" (New York Times). Issued the same year in a signed limited edition, no priority established.

A handsome signed copy in fine condition.
