"ALL THE VERY BEST!": FIRST EDITION OF THE BUSH FAMILY COOKBOOK, SIGNED BY BUSH FAMILY CHEF ARIEL DE GUZMAN, G.W. BUSH, AND BARBARA BUSH
(BUSH, George H.W.) (BUSH, Barbara) DE GUZMAN, Ariel. The Bush Family Cookbook. New York: Scribner, (2005). Quarto, original half red cloth, original dust jacket. $450.
First edition of this cookbook by the Bush family chef featuring many of the family's favorite recipes, signed and inscribed by the author, Ariel De Guzman: "All the very best! Ariel De Guzman," and additionally signed by President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush.
In his foreword, President George H.W. Bush thanks Ariel De Guzman for his many years on the president's staff —from his time as vice president, during his presidency, and afterward in Houston. Barbara Bush adds that De Guzman is "a miracle man, not only as a 'good soldier' (Navy Man) but also as a great chef," and Governor Jeb Bush praises his many "genuine and sincere acts of kindness." In addition to featuring hundreds of Bush family—and White House—favorites, this volume also contains a recipe for "Jen's Broccoli Salad." Despite President Bush's famous opposition to broccoli, De Guzman recalls Barbara Bush asked him to serve the salad anyway, at a buffet. She hoped it would reform the anti-broccoli President Bush but, Guzman confesses, President Bush only picked up the bowl of salad to pass it along for others to enjoy: "He is still not reformed." This wonderful Bush Family Cookbook also features De Guzman's personal story, one President Bush calls "truly a great American story." With numerous color illustrations.
