"VIGOROUS, WITTY, AND INTRICATELY DESIGNED AND DETAILED": VIRGINIA LEE BURTON'S ILLUSTRATED SONG OF ROBIN HOOD, WINNER OF A 1948 CALDECOTT HONOR MEDAL

BURTON, Virginia Lee; MALCOLMSON, Anne; CASTAGNETTA, Grace. Song of Robin Hood. [Boston]: Houghton Mifflin (Riverside Press), (1947). Tall quarto, original black cloth decoratively stamped in red and silver, illustrated endpapers, original dust jacket.

First edition of this revival of 13th- and 14th-century popular ballads, unearthed by Malcolmson and arranged by Castagnetta, with illustrations and ornamentations in scratch-board and pen-and-ink on every page by Caldecott winner Virginia Lee Burton.

"Burton's intricate theory of design… was particularly effective in Song of Robin Hood—her sense of the wholeness of the book, that is, the relationship of successive pages, which she showed by reprising each page in a sequence of drawings… that are vigorous, witty, and intricately designed and detailed" (Silvey, 109-110). With a two-page introduction by Burton.

Book fine, unrestored original dust jacket with mild edge-wear and a few short closed tears, bright and near-fine. An excellent copy of this wonderfully illustrated volume. Scarce.
