"BORN INTO THIS": SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION OF CHARLES BUKOWSKI'S IN THE SHADOW OF THE ROSE, ONE OF ONLY 26 COPIES SIGNED BY BUKOWSKI AND SPECIALLY BOUND

BUKOWSKI, Charles. In the Shadow of the Rose. Santa Rosa: Black Sparrow Press, 1991. Quarto, original half magenta cloth, paper spine label, decorative boards, original acetate dust wrapper. $1500.

Signed limited first (and only) edition of this collection of poems, letter "I" of only 26 lettered copies signed by Bukowski and handbound in decorative boards by Earle Gray.

This is the only edition of this collection, though all but one of the poems ("This Rejoinder") appeared in the 1992 collection The Last Night of the Earth. "Bukowski’s writings presented a vision of America starkly different from other celebratory accounts of post-World War II prosperity. Barflies, whores, and vengeful managers populated his pages. But at the same time, he made the down-and-out, crapulous life seem romantic" (ANB). Bukowski dedicated this volume to Sean Penn. Issued simultaneously with 750 numbered and signed copies in a paper dust jacket. Krumhansl 122a.

A fine signed copy. Scarce.
