Our Base Ball Club and How It Won the Championship

"THE FIRST NOVEL DEVOTED EXCLUSIVELY TO BASEBALL"

BROOKS, Noah. Our Base Ball Club and How It Won the Championship. New York: E.P. Dutton, 1884. Quarto, original black- and gilt-stamped pictorial blue cloth.

First edition, with an introduction by A.G. Spalding and ten full-page wood-engraved illustrations, including frontispiece, in gilt-stamped pictorial cloth.

Our Base Ball Club is "the first novel devoted exclusively to baseball" (Grobani 12-2c). Its story begins when two teams from different sides of the track start a game, and soon "becomes an interesting picture of baseball a decade or so before the book was published. The town fathers decide to sponsor a team, putting together the best players from both the teams that open the book. They bring in some others, begin to pay them on a scale so that most of them are professionals. The Catalpa team eventually wins the state championship, and the star from the wrong side of the tracks makes it as a lawyer on the good side of town. This was also serialized in St. Nicholas." A full-page illustration on page 136 reflects the unfamiliarity of the game, in that "the layout of the diamond (home plate is at the upper right) bears no relationship to the stands. The left fielder apparently had lined up in foul territory and is pursuing the fly into fair ground and an imminent collision with a center fielder, who looks like he lined up in left field… other details ring true. The umpire (black coat, white pants) is lined up to the side of the plate, the second baseman is playing on top of the bag, and the fielders wear no gloves" (McCue, 24-5). With an Introduction by A.G. Spalding; also with Spalding baseball equipment advertisement. McCue, 24.

Marginal tear to two plates, occasional foxing and staining to text, moderate wear, light soiling, and ring stain to original cloth. A very good copy.
