2000 Year Old Man in the Year 2000

“AFTER YOU READ THIS, YOU WILL LAUGH FOR AT LEAST 2000 YEARS”: THE 2,000 YEAR OLD MAN IN THE YEAR 2000, INSCRIBED BY MEL BROOKS AND CARL REINER IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION

BROOKS, Mel. The 2000 Year Old Man in the Year 2000. The Book. (New York): Cliff Street Books, (1997). Octavo, original half tan cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition, boldly inscribed on the half title in the year of publication, “To Jennifer, Happy —day [unclear], 1997, Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks.”

In 1950 Carl Reiner took his new tape recorder to a meeting with Mel Brooks. Instead of saying “Testing, Testing,” Reiner turned to Brooks. “Is it true that you were at the scene of the Crucifixion some 2,000 years ago?” With Brooks’ immediate response—a long weary moan of “Oooooooooboy”—the hilarious and often ad-libbed routine that became “The 2,000 Year Old Man” was born. In 1997 Brooks and Reiner brought their comic genius to print with The 2000 Year Old Man in the Year 2000, offering words of wisdom on everything from yogurt to the Spanish Inquisition.

A fine inscribed copy.
