Illustrations of the Passes of the Alps

BROCKEDON’S 96 FINE ENGRAVINGS OF THE ALPS, 1828-29, WITH 13 DETAILED MAPS, BEAUTIFULLY BOUND

BROCKEDON, William. Illustrations of the Passes of the Alps. London: Printed for the Author, 1828-29. Two volumes. Folio, contemporary full green morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines and boards, raised bands, all edges gilt.

First edition, large-paper copy, in book form of this 19th-century traveler’s detailed guide through the Alps, with 96 fine steel-engraved plates of Alpine scenery and 13 maps (one double-page), beautifully bound in contemporary full calf-gilt.

This pictorial work depicts various stages along 12 routes of passage through the Alps, each documented by eight engravings of mountain terrain after Brockedon, an accompanying description of features and a map. A double-page map of all the routes appears at the rear of Volume II. Volume I documents Little Saint Bernard, Mont Genèvre, Mont Cenis, Mont Saint Gothard, Great Saint Bernard, and Monte Stelvio. Volume II treats Cornice, Grimsel and Gries, Bernardin and Splugen, Brenner, Tende and Argentière, and Simplon. Each impression bears the embossed stamp of William Brockedon. Neate B170. Bookplates of Edward Francis Hutton, founder of stock brokerage firm E.F. Hutton.

Scattered foxing to plates and text, contemporary calf quite handsome. A lovely copy.
