“THE GREATEST FIRST SYMPHONY IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC”: BRAHMS’ FIRST SYMPHONY, FIRST EDITION OF THE FULL SCORE

BRAHMS, Johannes. Symphonie (C moll) für Grosses Orchester… op. 68. Partitur. Berlin: N. Simrock, 1877. Folio, contemporary marbled paper boards, burgundy morocco spine label.

First edition of the full score of Brahms’ First Symphony, fully engraved with lithographed title page. The copy of William Strickland, the first conductor of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.

Inhibited by Beethoven’s achievements in symphonic composition, and traumatized by the poor reception given to his early Piano Concerto, Brahms was reluctant to produce his first symphony. He began to work on it in 1855; seven years later, one movement was nearly finished, but Brahms laid it aside. Eleven more years passed. After writing the great Haydn Variations (1873) Brahms seems to have felt renewed confidence in his orchestral powers: the symphony was completed and first performed in 1876. “The symphony he finally did produce was described by Hans von Bülow as ‘Beethoven’s Tenth Symphony’ and by others as ‘the greatest first symphony in the history of music.’ He had, in short, emerged as the greatest symphonic composer since Beethoven” (Cross I:125). This first edition of the full score was published in 1877, simultaneously with the individual orchestral parts. McCorkle, 288. Fuld, 551. Typed note and pencil notation stating that this copy was presented as a gift to William Strickland, the first music director and conductor of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra from 1946 to 1951. Pencil notation and date. Contemporary bookseller stamp on title page.
