JOE LOUIS VS. MAX BAER: RARE ORIGINAL 1935 PROGRAM FOR THE FAMOUS LOUIS/BAER BOUT AT YANKEE STADIUM FEATURING BEAUTIFUL COVER ART BY GRANT POWERS

BOXING. Joe Louis vs. Max Baer. Yankee Stadium, N.Y. September 24, 1935. Official Program 25c. [New York: Harry M. Stevens, 1935]. Quarto, staple-bound as issued, original pictorial paper wrappers.

Rare original 1935 program for one of the most famous boxing matches in history—Joe Louis vs. Max Baer—featuring biographies of both men, an order of bouts for the entire night, and a beautiful cover illustration by artist Grant Powers.

This program was published for the famed September 24, 1935 Louis/Baer fight, in which Joe Louis knocked out Max Baer in the fourth round. Ring Magazine named it “Fight of the Year” and it was after this fight that Ernest Hemingway wrote that Louis was “Too good to be true, and absolutely true… the most beautiful fighting machine I have ever seen.” The program include the “Life Story of Joe Louis” and the “Life and Career of Max Baer” as well as the “order of Bouts on Tonight’s Card,” culminating in “Main Event—Fifteen Rounds. Max Baer of Livermore, Cal. vs. Joe Louis of Detroit Mich.” The wonderful cover art on the program is by Grant Powers.

Only a few smudges to interior, very faint vertical crease from folding. An exceptional copy. Rare.
