BOWLES, Paul. Next to Nothing. Collected Poems 1926-1977. Santa Barbara: Black Sparrow, 1981. Octavo, original half blue cloth, paper spine label.
Signed limited first edition, number 111 of 300 copies signed by Paul Bowles on a tipped in leaf.
“An icon of individualism… Paul Bowles was idolized by writers of the Beat Generation” (New York Times). Living in Tangier from 1952 until his death in 1999, Bowles wrote with a view “that modern culture proves increasingly ineffective in giving check to the abyss” (Vinson, 160). This work shares its title, though not its overall contents, with the individual dream poem “Next to Nothing,” which Bowles published separately under that name in 1976 and which is merely one of the many poems included in this compilation. Some of the poems in this compilation were previously published in poetry journals. Published simultaneously with 500 cloth trade copies and 26 hand-bound and signed copies. Without original acetate. Owner stamp.
