"ONE OF THE WORLD'S PREEMINENT PHOTOGRAPHERS": FIRST EDITION OF SAY, IS THIS THE U.S.A., 1941, WITH 86 STRIKING PHOTOGRAVURES BY BOURKE-WHITE AND TEXT BY CALDWELL

CALDWELL, Erskine, BOURKE-WHITE, Margaret. Say, Is This the U.S.A. New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, (1941). Small folio (measures 9 by 12-1/4 inches), original photographic boards, original photographic dust jacket.

First edition of the third photobook by Bourke-White and Caldwell, with 86 dramatic full-page black-and-white photogravures of America at the beginning of WWII, in original dust jacket.

"One of the world's preeminent photographers" (New York Times), Bourke-White "was a woman of firsts: the first photographer for Fortune, the first Western professional photographer permitted into the Soviet Union, Life magazine's first female photographer, and the first female war correspondent credentialed to work in combat zones during WWII" (Library of Congress). While covering the Dust Bowl for Fortune in 1934, she became "concerned with photographing its human elements. Shortly after meeting writer Caldwell in 1936, that newly awakened interest led to a collaboration with him that resulted in You Have Seen Their Faces (1937)… This first success with Caldwell led to two other collaborations with the writer, North of the Danube (1939) and Say, is this the U.S.A. (1941)" (ANB). The two were briefly married; this was their final photobook. Bourke-White's photographs, here and for Life magazine, "captured the attention and imagination of millions of Americans… and helped create the look of picture magazines in the U.S." Novelist Caldwell, whose works on "the Depression-era Deep South brought him instant fame," was praised by William Faulkner as "one of the five best contemporary American writers, along with himself, Thomas Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos" (New York Times). "First Edition" on copyright page.

Book fine; light edge-wear, small bit of early tape reinforcement to verso of colorful near-fine dust jacket.
