“THESE FANTASTIC TALES”: FIRST EDITION OF BORGES’ EL ALEPH, 1949, INSCRIBED BY HIM

BORGES, Jorge Luis. El Aleph. Buenos Aires: Editorial Losada, S.A., (1949). Octavo, modern full red morocco gilt, raised bands.

First edition of this renowned collection of Borges’ short stories, inscribed by the author on the half title, “To ——, these fantastic tales. Jorge Luis Borges. Buenos Aires, 1950.”

This volume is Borges' "second great gathering of Ficciones, a worthy successor to the first, and the confirmation of Borges' international stature… Borges himself conceded that, along with Ficciones [1944], this was his major book" (Vallely, 112). In the title story, one of his most celebrated and significant, Borges borrows from Dante "the fundamental theme that a woman's love may lead to a vision of universal wholeness" and seeks "to express the rapturous totality of self and world" (Williamson, 278, 124). Text in Spanish. Loewenstein 294. Becco 37.

Text with usual light marginal embrowning. Beautifully bound.
