Lovely illuminated leaf from a French Book of Hours, circa 1450-1500, featuring 18 lines of gothic text, a two line initial on a burnished gold and floriated ground, seven one-line burnished gold initials, six intricate line extenders, and a beautiful floral border.
This illuminated leaf is from a French Book of Hours, circa 1450-1500. The recto comprises 18 lines of gothic text in black and red and includes part of Psalm 89. There is a two-line blue and pink initial on a burnished gilt ground with a delicate flower rendered in the center; seven burnished gold initials on pink, blue, and gold filigree grounds; six hairline blue and gold line extenders; and a very elaborate floral border with pink and blue flowers, acanthus leaves, and gilt buds. The verso appears to be broadly similar.
