LOVELY 15TH-CENTURY ILLUMINATED CALENDAR LEAF FROM A FRENCH BOOK OF HOURS

(ILLUMINATED LEAF). Illuminated Leaf from a Book of Hours. France, circa 1450-1500. Single vellum leaf (3 by 5 inches), illuminated in red, blue, green, beige, and black inks; handsomely window matted in silk and framed, entire piece measures 8-1/2 by 11-1/2 inches.

This illuminated leaf is from a French Book of Hours, circa 1450-1500. It offers a section of the calendar and includes gothic text in black, beige, and blue. It also features a two-line gilt initial on a filigree beige, blue, and white ground. The three-sided border features flowers, bugs, sprays, and acanthus leaves. The verso, faintly visible through the leaf, appears to feature similar text.
