"THOU O LORD WILT OPEN MY LIPS": SPLENDID ILLUMINATED LEAF FROM A FRENCH BOOK OF HOURS, CIRCA 1480, FEATURING A STRIKING HAND-COLORED IMAGE OF THE ANNUNCIATION

(ILLUMINATED LEAF). Illuminated Leaf from a Book of Hours. Limoges, France circa 1480. Single vellum leaf (4-3/4 by 6-1/2 inches), illuminated in gold, black, white, gray, red, orange, pink, green, and blue inks. Window matted and framed, entire piece measures 13 by 10 inches.

Splendid illuminated miniature from a French Book of Hours, a large, hand-colored image depicting the Annunciation, with four lines of Latin text from the Hours of the Virgin in Gothic script; four- and one-line initials, beautifully and elaborately bordered with the traditional leaves and flowers as well as a fox, a peacock, and a sparrow.

This beautiful illuminated miniature is from a Book of Hours from 15th-century Limoges, France. The Latin Gothic text is from the Hours of the Virgin. The large miniature depicts the Annunciation, exquisitely rendered. This arch-topped miniature of the Annunciation depicts the meeting of the Angel Gabriel and Virgin Mary in a richly appointed room. God the Father looks on from above with rays of light emanating toward Mary as the Holy Spirit—rendered as a dove—perches just above Gabriel and Mary. The interior of the room includes multi-paned windows, columns, a checkered floor, arches, and an altar reminiscent of a small church. The Virgin's robes are particularly luxurious—blue outside and gold within, billowing into folds on the floor. Most striking are the elaborate borders. An inner border consists of a flowered vine on burnished gold, while the thick outer border comprises the traditional leaves, flowers, acanthus leaves, and sprays as well as a sparrow, a peacock, and a fox. The recto bears four lines of Gothic text as well as a large, four-line "D" in blue and white filigree on a burnished gilt ground embellished with flowers. There is also a single-line initial "E" in gilt on a red, blue, and white ground. The verso features 14 lines of script in black and red, with four one-line gilt initials on blue, red, and white filigree grounds.

Slight wear along roughly detached edge. A stunning leaf.
