(ILLUMINATED LEAF). Illuminated Leaf from a Book of Hours. Northern France, circa 1470. Single vellum leaf (5 by 6-1/4 inches), illuminated in gold, black, white, gray, red, pink, green, blue, and brown inks; matted and window framed, entire piece measures 16 by 13 inches.

Beautiful illuminated leaf from a French Book of Hours, featuring five splendid miniatures depicting The Last Judgment and scenes from the life of David; three lines of Latin text from the Penitential Psalms; and an elaborate three-line initial.

This beautiful illuminated leaf is from a Book of Hours from France, circa 1470. It comprises three lines from the beginning of the Seven Penitential Psalms and five elaborate miniatures depicting The Last Judgment and scenes from the life of David, such as David slaying Goliath and God choosing David to be king. The recto has three lines of Gothic text in script as well as a small line extender and large three-line "D" in blue, white, and gold on a gilt ground with four strawberries in the center. The verso features 15 lines of similar script, five one-line initials rendered in gilt on filigreed red and blue grounds, three line extenders in the same style, and a lovely border composed of berries, leaves, sprays, and acanthus leaves.

A beautiful, unusual leaf in about-fine condition.
