History of the Old and New Testament

SPLENDIDLY BOUND AND COPIOUSLY ILLUSTRATED LARGE FOLIO HISTORY OF THE BIBLE, 1712

(BIBLE) (BLOME, Richard, translator). (FONTAINE, Nicolas), Sieur de Royaumont. The History of the Old and New Testament. Extracted from the Sacred Scriptures, the Holy Fathers, and Other Ecclesiastical Writers. London: Jeremiah Bright, et al., 1712. Large folio (12 by 18 inches), contemporary full black paneled morocco gilt, rebacked with original ornately gilt-decorated spine neatly laid down, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

Expanded fourth edition in English of this spectacular production, superbly illustrated with 260 full-page copper-engraved plates, including two engraved frontispieces (one at front, one before the New Testament), and with five fine folding maps. Beautifully bound in contemporary morocco-gilt.

De Royaumont’s classic history of the Bible, translated from the original French by Richard Blome and others, this edition further revised by Dr. Anthony Horneck and other “Orthodox Divines.” Profusely illustrated with extraordinarily beautiful engraved plates depicting Biblical scenes by various artists, and with several folding maps of the Holy Land. History of the Old Testament first published in 1690; History of the New Testament in 1688. This fourth edition adds several discourses on the Apocrypha (and 20 illustrations not included in the first or second editions but present in the 1705 third edition), as well as a concise summary and listing of contents for each book of the Bible. Lowndes, 2147.

Mild discoloration to last few leaves of text; plates generally quite clean; a few short marginal closed tears. Stately contemporary morocco-gilt binding expertly restored and quite handsome. A desirable copy.
