Painter Alexandre Bida (1813-95) studied under Eugène Delacroix, and he traveled and worked in Egypt, Greece, and the Middle East. As a Bible illustrator, Bida's Les Saints Evangeles first appeared in France in 1873. "His most important work as an illustrator is an edition of the Gospels (1873)" (Benezit, II: 23).
