BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF SAMUEL BURDER'S BIBLE, WITH EXPLANATIONS BASED ON EASTERN STUDIES, 1811

(BIBLE) BURDER, Samuel. The Scripture Expositor: A New Commentary, Critical and Practical, on the Holy Bible. London: Albion Press for J. and J. Cundee, (1811). Two volumes. Large, thick quarto, contemporary full straight-grain red morocco gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

Second Burder edition, with marginal annotations informed by Eastern studies, and illustrated with frontispieces and engraved title pages for the Old and New Testaments, 62 full-page engravings, two maps and two diagrams (one folding). In beautiful contemporary morocco-gilt bindings.

Burder applied the study of Eastern Antiquities to many "obscure and difficult" chapters in the Bible, in order to help in their explanation and interpretation. He developed this approach throughout his works, first in his Oriental Customs (1802), then in his edition of the Bible (first published in 1809) and finally in Oriental Literature (1812)— all of which seek to explain the scriptures through the study of Eastern literature. "The application of Oriental Literature," he writes in the dedication, "to the elucidation of the Scriptures, is a method of interpretation both rational and safe." Illustrated with frontispieces, engraved title pages, 62 full-page engravings, two maps and two diagrams (one folding). Engraved title pages dated 1808 and 1811 by the engraver; dedication and some internal plates also dated 1811. Presentation bookplates, dated 1811.

Text generally clean, occasional foxing and dampstaining to plates. Contemporary bindings beautiful.
