SUPERBLY BOUND AND ILLUSTRATED THREE-VOLUME FOLIO BIBLE, WITH 106 FINE COPPERPLATE ENGRAVINGS

(BIBLE) (RIDER, William, editor). The Christian's Family Bible. Containing the Old and New Testaments at Large; and the Apocrypha. London: for the Author, 1763-1767. Three volumes. Tall, thick folio (10 by 14-1/2 inches), period-style full dark brown calf, gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, red and green morocco spine labels.

Splendid illustrated 18th-century three-volume folio edition of the Bible, the first to be edited and revised by Rev. William Rider, with 97 fine full-page engravings and nine engraved maps, very handsomely bound in period-style calf-gilt bindings.

The King James Version of the Bible (first published 1611) has exercised an incalculable impact on piety, language and literature throughout the English-speaking world. Macaulay praised it as "a book, which if everything else in our language should perish, would alone suffice to show the whole extent of its beauty and power" (PMM 114). This finely printed folio edition was edited and annotated by Rev. William Rider. "The Christian Family's Bible (1763-1767), in three large folio volumes, contained lengthy comments by the editor. Rider also contributed verses to the Gentleman's Magazine under the pseudonym Philargyrus… Rider's other major work was A New History of England (50 vols., 1761-1764), dedicated to George III. This work was designed to be an affordable and popular whig history of England, and contained lively engravings" (ODNB). With subscriber's list and directions to the binder. Not in Herbert or Darlow & Moule. Early owner signature to title pages of Volumes I and III, dated 1766 on Volume III title page.

Paper repairs to three leaves: final leaf of subscribers and directions to the binder in Volume I, and title page of Volume III. Corner of leaf Oo torn away, affecting nine lines of Rider's notes but not Biblical text; small marginal corner tear to Volume II title page. Occasional faint dampstain or marginal wormtrace; text generally quite clean and fine. Period-style calf-gilt bindings in fine condition and quite handsome. An impressive illustrated folio Bible.
