(ILLUMINATED LEAF). Illuminated leaf from a Medieval Bible. England, circa 1240. Single vellum leaf, measuring 6 by 8-1/2 inches, scribed in black ink, illuminated in red and blue inks. Floated with red satin matt and window framed, entire piece measures 15-1/2 by 12-1/2 inches.

Wonderful illuminated leaf from a 13th-century English Bible, scribed in Latin and taken from Acts 21-24, with one two-line initial and two one-line numerals as well as a chapter heading, all executed in red and blue with elaborate scrollwork.

This leaf from an English bible, circa 1240, with text from Acts 21-24. It is scribed in two columns of Latin, each containing 49 lines of text in black ink with red accents. There are two red and blue one-line Roman numerals as well as a heading executed similarly and a larger two-line initial in red. The leaf is embellished with distinctive red and blue scrollwork, some in the form of a descender and ascender from the initial. The verso is similar.

A very nearly fine leaf.
