BAGSTER’S “CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT”: HIS INCLUSIVE AND IMPORTANT FOLIO POLYGLOT BIBLE, BEAUTIFULLY BOUND

BIBLE. Biblia Sacra Polyglotta: Textus Archetypos Versionesque Præcipuas ab Eccelsia Antiquitus Receptas… London: Samuel Bagster and Sons, circa 1849. Two volumes. Folio (10 by 16 inches), contemporary full brown morocco gilt, elaborately blind-tooled spines and boards, raised bands, beveled edges, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt and gauffered.

Mid-19th century folio edition of Bagster’s comprehensive polyglot Bible, beautifully bound.

Samuel Bagster’s “long and honorable career as a publisher of aids to the study of the Scriptures has earned for him the esteem of all biblical scholars. His own attainments in this direction were considerable, and his taste and enterprise are well displayed in the handsome typographical appearance of the numerous volumes which bear his imprint” (DNB). His polyglot Bible, “the most inclusive since the London Polyglot [of 1657], contains the Old and New Testaments in eight languages, with the Samaritan Pentateuch and the Syriac New Testament added in an appendix” (Darlow & Moule 1456). Text in Latin, Hebrew, Greek, English, German, French, Italian and Spanish. “The first issue of the Biblia Sacra Polyglotta Bagsteriana appeared between 1817 and 1828, four volumes in foolscap octavo and quarto form… A folio edition of the polyglot was published in 1828 [and was] repeated in 1831” (DNB). Morocco-gilt presentation bookplate.

A fine copy of an impressive and beautiful production.
