FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, OF A PROPER MONETARY AND BANKING SYSTEM FOR THE UNITED STATES, WITH A TYPED PRESENTATION CARD ISSUED ON BEHALF OF EDITOR JAMES WASHINGTON BELL
BELL, James Washington and SPAHR, Walter Earl, editors. A Proper Monetary and Banking System for the United States. New York: Ronald Press, (1960). Octavo, original navy cloth, original dust jacket.
First edition, presentation copy, of this important work on monetary policy, with the editor's typed and printed presentation card laid in reading: "Sent at the request of Dr. James Washington Bell… With the compliments of Economists' National Committee on Monetary Policy."
In this work, a selection of famous post-war monetary theorists offer solutions for correcting the economy of the United States, with specific attention paid to reinstituting a version of the gold standard. Issues discussed include monetary instruments, legal considerations, monetizing the Federal debt, gold clause contracts, the structure of the central banking system, the Federal Reserve, commercial banks and the stock market, and recommendations for the future. This book was essentially the group pronouncement of the Economists' National Committee on Monetary Policy and, accordingly, reflected the prevailing views of the leading monetary economists in 1960—most of which were anti-Keynesian and virtually none of which were ultimately turned into legislation. With printed presentation card reading: "With the compliments of Economists' National Committee on Monetary Policy" and with typed addition at top reading: "Sent at the request of Dr. James Washington Bell."
Book fine, dust jacket extremely good with light wear to extremities and mild toning. A desirable copy.
