A FINE COMPLEMENT TO LE MORTE D'ARTHUR: LOVELY COPY OF THE BEARDSLEY ILLUSTRATIONS OMITTED FROM THE FIRST EDITION

BEARDSLEY, Aubrey. The Morte Darthur Portfolio [half title]. Reproductions of Eleven Designs Omitted from the First Edition of Le Morte Darthur Illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley and Published in MDCCCXCIII… London: J.M. Dent & Sons, 1927. Quarto, original half tan calf, bevelled vellum boards with gilt floral illustrations, top edge gilt, uncut.

Limited edition of this suite of 11 Beardsley designs for the Morte Darthur that were omitted from the 1893 first edition, number 30 of only 300 copies printed, uncut in original vellum-gilt boards featuring Beardsley's floral design used for the cloth covers of the first edition.

This beautifully bound and printed volume contains 11 Beardsley drawings intended as chapter headings for the first edition and inadvertently omitted, a large reproduction of the famous Merlin drawing, a sketch for a cover design which was not used, and the cover design used for the original issue in parts. This volume was printed so that owners of the first edition of Le Morte Darthur might complete it with a lovely new volume, rather than purchasing a later edition. Lasner 22D.

Interior clean and fine, vellum boards extremely with a bit of spotting, gilt bright. A lovely uncut copy in the original binding.
