“THE CLIMAX TO AN INTRICATE DRAMA… THE DEVELOPING DECLINE AND FALL OF THE GALACTIC EMPIRE”

ASIMOV, Isaac. Foundation. New York: Gnome Press, (1951). Octavo, original blue cloths, original dust jacket.

Fine first edition of the first book in Asimov’s galaxy-spanning epic, transposing the fall of the Roman Empire into a futuristic key and inaugurating “one of the most influential works of modern science fiction” (Chronology of American Literature).

Based on stories published in Astounding Science Fiction beginning in 1942, Foundation not only set the standard for all “future histories” to follow but also helped secure Asimov’s status as a giant in the genre: “his was the voice to which science fiction came down in the end” (Clute & Nicholls, 58). Over the next four decades, Asimov wrote seven additional “Foundation” novels— and that impressive count does not include the novels from his “Robot” and “Galactic Empire” series set in the same ficitonal universe. Critic and fellow science fiction writer Thomas M. Disch praised these novels for powerfully evoking the “gasp of wonder [that] was the Asimovian grail.” First edition, binding variant A (cloth), with correct page dimensions. First state dust jacket, with rear panel advertising three titles. Currey, 12. Anatomy of Wonder II-47.

Bright dust jacket price-clipped with slightest rubbing to extremities. A beautiful copy in fine condition of a masterful milestone of the science fiction genre.
