“THE FATHER OF ENGLISH PROSE”: THE WORKS OF ROGER ASCHAM, EDITED BY SAMUEL JOHNSON, 1761
(JOHNSON, Samuel) ASCHAM, Roger. The English Works of Roger Ascham, Preceptor to Queen Elizabeth. With Notes and Observations, and the Author’s Life. By James Bennet. London: R. and J. Dodsley and J. Newbery, 1761. Quarto, contemporary full tan polished speckled calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, red morocco spine label.
First edition of Ascham’s English works, including his famous treatise on the “the psychology of learning,” with a dedication to the Earl of Shaftesbury and a “Life of Roger Ascham,” both written by Samuel Johnson, who is now credited by modern scholars as the editor of the entire work.
British humanist, scholar, and author, famous for his prose style, his promotion of the vernacular, and his theories of education, Roger Ascham served as Queen Elizabeth I’s private tutor before and after she ascended to the throne. Often considered “the Father of English Prose” (Allibone, 72), Ascham wrote “pure, idiomatic, vigorous English; [his writings] exhibit great variety of knowledge, remarkable sagacity, and sound common sense” (Allibone, 73). This collection includes Ascham’s two most famous works, Toxophilus (1545), the first English treatise on archery, and his best-known book The Scholemaster, published posthumously in 1570. Written in simple English prose, The Scholemaster deals with “the psychology of learning, the education of the whole man, and the ideal moral and intellectual personality that education should mold” (Britannica). “It is a classic in the history of education as well as a recognized landmark in the progress of English prose composition” (Pforzheimer 15). Although James Bennet is credited as the editor, the “Life of Ascham,” was clearly written by Samuel Johnson (see Lowndes), and this collection “must now rank among Johnson’s major performances in editorial scholarship” (Chapman & Hazen, 145). Lowndes, 78. See PMM 90. Manuscript shelf marks on front endpapers.
Text quite crisp and clean, with only occasional faint foxing and minor crease to first few leaves, top of front outer hinge just starting. A handsome copy in about-fine condition.
