My Dream of Martin Luther King
My Dream of Martin Luther King

"A PERSONAL, HEARTFELT INTERPRETATION OF KING'S LEGACY, INNOVATIVE AND STIRRING": FIRST EDITION OF MY DREAM OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, INSCRIBED BY ARTIST FAITH RINGGOLD

RINGGOLD, Faith. My Dream of Martin Luther King. New York: Crown, 1995. Tall quarto, original laminated pictorial paper boards, original dust jacket.

First edition of a moving tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by the famed African American artist and author, boldly signed in gold ink on the pictorial half title by her, "To V— Faith Ringgold," with 26 splendid color illustrations, including the striking image of Dr. King on the original dust jacket.

In this dramatic and beautifully illustrated book, "Ringgold embroiders her vision of King's life and message with scenes from a dream." In it, King is pictured as a boy who faces segregation in schools and on buses, and watches protesters attacked by the police with dogs and firehoses. The dream shows him as he meets Rosa Parks, forms the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and leads "his people to the nation's capital," where he proclaims his own dream that "one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed." With moving images of King's assassination and a nation in mourning, Ringgold shows people of "all colors, races and religions" united as King's words proclaim: "I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But… we, as a people, will get to the promised land." In the book's powerful illustrations, conveyed in a "palette of subdued colors, Ringgold gives her scenes a simple, direct, childlike look, focusing attention on eloquent faces and large, particularly expressive eyes" (Kirkus). "It is a personal, heartfelt interpretation of King's legacy, innovative and stirring" (Publishers Weekly). First edition, first printing: issued in laminated pictorial paper boards (this copy) and in a library binding. With 26 color illustrations by Ringgold, many full- and double page, including the image on the pictorial boards and dust jacket. Small owner signature of the recipient.

A fine copy.
