(HUNTING) (HORSES) [APPERLEY, Charles] NIMROD, editor. Sporting Embellished by Large Engravings and Vignettes. London: A.H. Baily, 1838. Folio, contemporary three-quarter crimson morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, all edges gilt.

First edition, with frontispiece, engraved extra title page, and 21 full-page engraved plates of horses, hounds and the hunt, and with 15 wood-engraved in-text vignettes.

The fine folio engravings are made after paintings by T. Gainsborough, E. Landseer, A. Cooper, R.A. Hancock, J.F. Lewis, and others. Edited anonymously by Charles Apperley, Sporting includes literary contributions by Thomas Hood and John Hamilton Reynolds, among others. Mellon 158. Bookplate.

Some restoration to joints and extremities, inner paper hinges reinforced. First few leaves brittle at edges, with minor split along gutter to extra title page, closed tear to edge of plate opposite page 71, just touching image, otherwise images clean and fine. A very good copy.
