“MY LOVE, SHE’S BUT A LASSIE YET”: THE VICTORIAN EROTIC NOVEL FLOSSIE, BOUND IN RABBIT FUR

ANONYMOUS. Flossie, a Venus of Fifteen: by One Who Knew this Charming Goddess and Worshipped at Her Shrine. London and New York: Erotica Biblion Society, circa 1900. Slim octavo, 20th-century full rabbit skin with the white fur still on, marbled endpapers (original wrappers bound in).

Later edition of this rare and authentic example of the underground Victorian erotic novel, bound in white rabbit fur by John Field.

Erotic novels of the Victorian period were usually clandestine and anonymous (or written under a pseudonym), and sometimes undated, thereby making information about them elusive and often inaccurate. Flossie originally appeared in a limited edition in London in 1897, presumably published by Charles Carrington, the leading publisher of erotica at the time, with the imprint: “Printed at Carnapolis for the Delecation of the Amorous and the Instruction of the Innocent, in the Year of the Excitement of the Sexes.” The narrator, “Captain Jack Archer,” has been associated by some scholars with Algernon Charles Swinburne. This re-publication by the Erotica Biblion Society includes a poem by Swinburne and a notice that “Flossie herself revised this unpretending work, and has added a footnote here and there.”

Fine condition.
