INSCRIBED BY EINSTEIN: THE WORLD AS I SEE IT, FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH
EINSTEIN, Albert. The World as I See It. New York: Friede, 1934. Octavo, original gray cloth, original dust jacket.
First edition in English of Einstein’s first work for the general reader, inscribed in German by the groundbreaking physicist (in German), “To the creator of the iron fly, Dr. S.B. Kahan, with warm greetings, Albert Einstein, 8.VI.36.”
The World as I See It features Einstein’s thoughts and personal philosophy on pacifism, Judaism, the German question, literature, modern science and more. The 1935 first English edition was preceded by the first edition, published in Amsterdam as Mein Weltbild in 1934, and this first edition in English, published in New York that same year. Scarce dust jacket in presumed variant on orange paper; copies are also seen printed on yellow paper. Dr. S.B. Kahan was both a sculptor and a dentist. The Brooklyn Museum exhibited some of his art in 1935.
Light offsetting and evidence of tape removal to endpapers; Einstein’s inscription on front free endpaper still legible. Light offsetting to pages 198-207. A couple of tiny abrasions to front board. Scarce dust jacket with one small tear with loss to front panel, toning to spine and chipping to spine ends. A near-fine copy, desirable inscribed by Einstein.
