FIRST EDITION OF THE GIRL IN A SWING, INSCRIBED BY RICHARD ADAMS
ADAMS, Richard. The Girl in a Swing. (London: Penguin, 1980). Octavo, original green paper boards, original dust jacket.
First edition, suppressed first issue, of Adams' fourth novel about a 1970s love affair threatened by the supernatural, inscribed on the title page: "Yours sincerely Richard Adams."
Watership Down author "Adams is one of those born storytellers whom many readers will follow anywhere—even into the minds of talking animals; even, as here, into the mind of narrator Alan Desland, an erudite and virtually sexless ceramics merchant in the Berkshire country west of London" (Kirkus). This is Adams' only contemporary novel, weaving together adept characterization, detailed description, and the excitement of the supernatural world. Suppressed first issue, with the character's name as "Käthe Guetner" not "Karin Forster" as in later issues. The change was made after the real Käthe Guetner threatened a libel suit.
A fine signed copy.
