“GEORGE PROMISED TO BE GOOD. BUT IT IS EASY FOR LITTLE MONKEYS TO FORGET…”: RARE FIRST EDITION OF CURIOUS GEORGE
REY, H.A. Curious George. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1941. Slim quarto, original red cloth, pictorial endpapers. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell box.
Rare first edition of this children’s classic.
Curious George made his literary debut in Paris as a mischievous minor character in a French children’s book entitled Rafi and the Nine Monkeys. Following the success of that work, H.A. Rey and his wife, Margret, decided to write a book featuring George as a main character. However, before the book could be submitted to a publisher, news came that that the Nazis were poised to march into Paris. As German Jews, the Reys were left with little choice but to flee. On June 14, 1940, just hours before the Nazis occupied the city, H.A. and Margret set out for Lisbon on homemade bicycles carrying only food, clothing, and five manuscripts, one of which was Curious George. Their journey took them to Brazil, where they originally met, and then to the United States, where Curious George was finally published in 1941. “Through the character of Curious George, the adventurous tailless monkey, H.A. Rey projected his own lively curiosity in the world around him and at the same time kept his stories within the realm of children’s activities and comprehension… Curious George remains a recognized and beloved monkey who will continue to amuse and comfort children for years to come” (Silvey, 554). Without virtually unobtainable original dust jacket. Faint evidence of erased inscription on ownership page.
Light scattered soiling and a few expertly repaired closed tears to interior, only slightest soiling and rubbing to extremities of original cloth. A near-fine copy. Rare.
