Social Life in Egypt

FIRST EDITION OF SOCIAL LIFE IN EGYPT

LANE-POOLE, Stanley. Social Life in Egypt. A Description of the Country and its People. London: J.S. Virtue, [1884]. Folio (10 by 13 inches), original black- and gilt-stamped brown cloth, all edges gilt.

First edition of this supplement to Picturesque Palestine focusing on Egyptian culture, with steel-engraved title page, five steel-engraved plates, and dozens of wood engravings, many full-page.

Although intended as a supplement to Picturesque Palestine, this beautifully illustrated work stands on its own due to its distinct subject matter. Stanley Lane-Poole was an accomplished Arabic scholar and historian as well as an avid traveler of the Middle East and Northern Africa. He was also a gifted observer of Egyptian culture and this work, though reflecting some of the prejudices of the period, provides remarkable insight into all aspects of 19th-century Egypt such as manners, the role of women, Islam, the home, education, and the influence of Europe. By the turn of the century, Lane-Poole had been hired to perform archaeological research for the Egyptian government. Faintest traces of red pencil underlining.

Scattered pinpoint foxing, light soiling to cloth and light wear, mainly to spine ends. Near-fine condition.
