COLLECTION OF FRENCH REVOLUTIONARY-ERA PAMPHLETS

(FRENCH REVOLUTION). Collection of revolutionary-era pamphlets (circa 1787-1799). Various places [France]: various publishers, circa 1787-99. Most octavo, most between 16 and 64 pages (longest is 180 pages, shortest is 2 pages); mostly disbound. Housed in four custom slipcases.

Collection of 165 French Revolutionary pamphlets, most dated between 1789 and 1793. Titles include “Voyage a la Bastille,” “Acte d’Accusation contre Marat,” “Relation Veritable et Remarquable du Grand Voyage du Pape en Enfer,” “Adresse du Prince Charles aux armees francaisas (1799), “Sur l’Education Nationale,” and “Le Coup de Grace des Jacobins.” Includes writings by the Abbe Fauchet, Louis Joseph de Conde, President of the Council of Five Hundred Marie-Joseph Chenier, Compte d’Artois (later Charles X), Henri-Maximin Isnard, and other citizens of the Republic.

“From 1787 onward the political pamphlet assumed increasing importance in France. Indeed, the process began almost officially: Once the king invited his subjects to proffer views and advice on the meeting of the Estates General, printing presses enabled a general debate about the reorganization of finances and the reform of abuses. Thereafter, as a matter of course, the ever-agile pen of the pamphleteer kept pace with the accelerating course of events… This ephemeral literature provided a running commentary on nearly everything, and it often did so by concentrating on spectacular episodes or prominent figures… Behind all the essays on constitution making, the declaration of rights, and appeals for unity among the three estates can be sensed the continuous intellectual ferment that accompanied the rapid march of events in the early years of the Revolution” (Darnton & Roche, Revolution in Print, 165). Most with small library shelf stickers, many with University of California perforation stamp.

Very good condition. Housed in four custom slipcases. A fascinating contemporary French Revolution collection.
