The Negro Newspaper takes a highly critical look at Black newspapers in the early post-war period. Oak covers important issues such as problems seeking out news stories, excessive sensationalism, and challenges with advertising. Oak also offers thoughtful suggestions for improvement. The appendices provide the names, addresses, founding dates, and circulations of Black and HBCU newspapers around the country. With a foreword by accomplished Black newspaperman Charles H. Loeb, sometimes called "the dean of black newsmen" and a 35-year veteran of the Cleveland Post and Call.
