Mixed edition set, handsomely bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe.

With engraved frontispiece portraits in each volume and several additional engraved portrait plates. Wraxall was found guilty of libel against Count Woronozow (for statements in the Historical Memoirs) and was sentenced to six months imprisonment and a fine of £500. This set includes a later revised edition of the Historical Memoirs, which was first published in 1815, and the second edition of the Posthumous Memoirs. Vol. I of the Historical Memoirs includes at rear Wraxall's answers to his critics. “You are imprisoned for giving to future ages a perfect picture of our time, and as interesting as Clarendon” (Sir George Osborn in a note to Wraxall, Allibone III, 2857).

Only occasional light foxing. A very handsome set.
