Autograph edition, number 2 of only 32 numbered copies, this set prepared for Hannah M. Standish and containing an article written and signed by Andrew Carnegie. A splendid production, with hand-colored initials and headpieces in the beginning of Volume I, numerous full-page illustrations, many hand-colored, and original ink illustrations on the first pages of dozens of articles, many hand-colored.
With introductory essay by Carnegie on Robert Burns. The set introduces the landmarks of European and American fiction by providing precis of significant novels, overviews of myth and folklore, a dictionary of authors, titles, and characters, and an index to the stories. Limitation page signed and sealed.
Interiors fine, a dozen volumes have been expertly restored, mostly at joints. A sumptuously bound set in excellent condition.
